Acapulco, known as the 'Pacific's Pearl' for its marvelous beaches, excellent weather, and its large and impressive bay, is one of the most popular ports in Mexico since it has kept a steady growth, as well as a tourism infrastructure fit for the most exigent traveler: a wide variety of hotels and restaurants, fun beach activities, and an intense night-life.

The word Acapulco comes from two nahuatl words: Sacatl-Reed (Plant that grows in the Lagoon), and Poloa-Destroy, which together mean 'Place where the reed bed was destroyed'.

An ancient legend tells that a Yope tribe that had established near the bay was attacked by other Nahuatl tribe, which defeated them and forced them to flee. The Nahuatl tribe was nomad, so they established themselves temporarily in the city taken from the Yopes. During their stay, Acatl, the son of the tribe's chief, was born and received the protection of their god, Quetzalcoatl. Acatl grew and left the place to find a wife, and in his journey he met Quiahuitl, daughter of the Yope tribe's chief that his father had defeated. Quiahuitl's father denied them his permission to get married and cursed Acatl by invoking his gods. Acatl returned to the place where he was born, where he cried so much that he became a lagoon where reed began to grow, without knowing that in this way the curse was being fulfilled.

Quetzalcoatl, who was furious for the damage made to his protégé, punished the Yopes through Quiahuitl transforming her into a cloud. One afternoon the cloud was passing by the bay and found the reed bed, the sons of his beloved Acatl. The rage and jealousy invaded her, so she rained onto them, destroying them and finally dissolving into Acatl, in this way reuniting them forever.
